Unfortunately, the new ’double’ photo still references the photos from the previous pair, so if I change the 2 photos for the new pair, the old pair are still using the same photos. Hi! I would not recommend if you are not well know After Effects. Technically it’s possible. Main photos and background photos are repeated, you should be able using on background only static photos.

Thank you I figured it out – for anyone else, I just duplicate not only the ‘double’ slide, but also the 2 slides within. Then I hide the original 2 slides, and rotate my 2 new slides 1 degree clockwise and 1 degree counter clockwise, and move one slide to the left and one to the right. Otherwise, the 2 photos within the new ‘double’ slide will still be related to the original ‘double’ slide.

When you want to extend the video, I followed your instructions. I duplicate the Part (CTRL-D), but do I also have to extend the video and drag the fade to the right?
Yes. For more photos you should duplicate Part in project window, then duplicate photos and replace photos in new Part, then place part to Montage and drag Fade to the right.
